My Top (Not so) Horror Movies for October

I’m not a horror movie fan. I do like zombies, so long as they are not too scary, I don’t like jump scares (mostly) and I really don’t like slasher type movies, or even really scary psychological thrillers. But there are some horror movies I do like and I’ll share them with you.

The Cornetto Trilogy

I’ve talked about these movies before They always feature in my favourite movies, but are they horror movies? Yes, but they are also funny and full of Easter Eggs. ‘Sean of the Dead’ is the first movie and it’s all about a zombie attack (but don’t talk about the ‘z’ word) There are some gory scenes but only one jump scare. The Second is ‘Hot Fuzz’ and I wasn’t so keen at first, there is one scene involving a church spire that just makes me feel urgh. But, the more I watch it, the more I love it. Some villages are just scary. Then Finally ‘The World’s End’ which is kind of scary but also very daft. Is the world worth saving? Maybe another pint of beer is the answer?

The Quiet Place 1 and 2.

It took me a long time to watch the Quiet Place. I wasn’t sure I could watch a movie with no sound. It certainly breaks the mould. It’s scary, weird, and really clever. The second movie was just as good. There are a few jump scares and a little bit of gore, but the tension is fabulous. For me, it was just scary enough.

Bird Box

I loved this Netflix movie and watched it a couple of times. The theme is similar to The Quiet Place but rather than having to keep quiet you have to stay blindfolded! There are a couple of jump scares and some mad moments, especially at the start when everyone starts killing themselves. I love that it has a happy ending though. You don’t always get that in a horror.

Old

I think this is one of the weirdest films I’ve ever watched, possibly! A group of people go to the beach were time is sped up and they age quickly. If they try to leave they die. If they stay, they grow old and die. It might not be the monster or scary type of film you could class as a horror, but there is also a bit of crazy goings on too. The ending is good.

28 Days Later

I can’t believe this movie is over 20 years old. It’s one of my favourites and the opening scenes of Jim waking up in a hospital bed after being in coma was also used in the beginning of The Walking Dead. He wakes up post apocalypse where a monkey from a science lab has released a virus on the nation. The spooky empty London Streets and the craziness of the survivors is a horror I’m not sure I’d want to survive. I do like to watch a good post apocalyptic film. And Cillian Murphy is a brilliant actor. (Note to self, ‘please get around to watching Peaky Blinders’) He also appears in The Quiet Place 2.

The Midnight Club

I’m cheating a little here as this is not a movie but a series. I started watching not sure what I was letting myself in for. Based on Young Adult Books, it really is quite scary. A bunch of dying teens in a hospice meet each night at midnight to tell each other scary stories and make a pact to send a message from the ‘other side’ when they pass. It’s both sad and scary. I did read that one of the episodes actually holds the Guinness Book of records for jump scares, 21 in all! And there is me saying I don’t like Jump scares.
